Energy consumption
Chemicals to save energy The pulp and paper industry is a major energy consumer, using 2,000-6,500 kWh to produce one ton of dried pulp. While chemical pulping actually requires more energy than does mechanical pulping, the processes are largely energy self-sufficient through burning waste products to generate steam. Moreover, adding chemicals to the wet end can reduce the total energy required. By shifting a greater proportion of the water removal to the early process stages and accelerating dewatering by using chemical additives, substantial energy savings can be achieved.
